PERFORMANCES
If you plan to perform at our events, you may only miss one class every month. Consistency is the key for success. Performing is great fun and a wonderful experience, however it is also a high honor and commitment to your classmates, your kumu and yourself. Your discipline and dedication contributes to the skill, grace and beauty of your group. You must know well all the choreographies to perform. Too many missed classes will require private lessons or solo audition.
UNIFORM PROTOCOL
Tahitian uniform is not a Halloween costume, and it is not streetwear. It must only be worn during tahitian class. Uniform must always be cleaned and ironed.
HANDOUTS PROTOCOL
A handout given by your kumu is not just a piece of paper, it represents the knowledge that has been gifted to your kumu, and the knowledge that has been gifted to those before your kumu, and this sacred gift is ow handed down to you, treat it with respect and appreciation. It is your responsibility to read it, study it and keep it organized.
PERFORMANCE ATTIRE PROTOCOL
Performance attire must be worn only during performances, it is not a Halloween costume or streetwear. It is your responsibility to have your full performance attire ready the night before performance. To you, you might be “only missing one thing” but to the whole halau you will be the reason of not looking even and professional. Please note that it is not your kumu’s responsibility to solve your attire problems on the day of performance, and that she does not carry extra attires in case that you didn’t bring yours.
PONO LIFESTYLE
Being a haumana in a halau means more than just looking pretty in a tahitian attire, it is a whole spiritual journey of acceptance, humbleness, discipline and commitment. A pono lifestyle means harmony with your environment, with all living beings and nature, and with yourself. It means to be conscious of your behavior, understand and respect the value in each human being regarding if you like them or not, acceptance of other people backgrounds, and personalities, but instead embracing every person with compassion, kindness and unconditional love.
